43. How to connect to a Cisco router or switch

How to connect to a Cisco router or a switch?

  • remotely: telnet or ssh
  • physically with a cable. RJ45 port with Roll-over Cable (1 side to console & another to PC with DB9 convertor into PCs Serial Port)
    • RJ45 to DB9
    • USB to USB
    • USB to DB9 converter
    • USB to RJ45

To SSH into a switch: Putty.exe > Serial (find COM Port Number in Device Manager) > OK

  • en - to enter Privilege mode
  • erase - erase configuration

  • Say NO for CONFIGURATION DIALOG.

  • show version shows version of the switch
  • conf? to see available command
  • configure terminal which will take you to Global configuration Mode
  • hostname ? show avialble configrations for hostname command
  • hostname /PLACE SWITCH NAME HERE it will change Switch Name, to your specified NAME
  • end brings you back to privilege mode
  • copy running-config startup-config which will save System Configuration to the NV RAM
  • end brings you back to priviledge mode
  • wr old command to save the configs

45. Router initial configuration

Physically connect to the Router:

  • USB to USB
  • USB to Serial Port DB9

CCNA/DavidBombal/CISCOcomands

Putty > set COMX number from Device manager > OK

  • show version
  • en to go to privilege mode
  • conf t to go to global configuration mode
  • end brings you back to privilege mode
  • disable takes you back to User mode
  • exit exits the router

46. Build a basic Cisco network

Create a basic network of a:

  • 1 x Switch
  • 2 x Routers And then try ping them.

  • en to enter privilege mode
  • show ip interface brief to see interfaces
  • configure terminal to enter Global config mode
  • hostname /anyname/ to rename device to anyname you wish
  • interface /typeINinfofromshowIPcommand/ to set the interface
  • no shutdown to enable the interface
  • ip address 10.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
  • end
  • wr to save the configs
